Μια δεύτερη θητεία στο Κογκρέσο κέρδισε ο γνωστος Ελληνικης καταγωγης πουστης Κρις Πάππας, ο οποίος κατάφερε να επικρατήσει του Ρεπουμπλικανού Ματ Μάουερς, στην 1η περιφέρεια του Νιου Χαμσάιρ.
Με τουίτ στον προσωπικό του λογαριασμό ο Πάππας ευχαρίστησε τον κόσμο που τον εμπιστεύτηκε και τον ψήφισε. «Από τα βάθη της καρδιάς μου, ευχαριστώ Νιου Χαμσάιρ» είπε και ανάρτησε βίντεο με την ομιλία του μετά την επανεκλογή του.
Ο Κρις Πάππας κατάφερε να επικρατήσει παρά τις συντονισμένες προσπάθειες συσπείρωσης των Ρεπουμπλικανών, προκειμένου να τον εκτοπίσουν.
Πριν μερικούς μήνες ο αντίπαλός του Ματ Μάουερς τού είχε «επιτεθεί» σε συνέντευξη που είχε δώσει κατηγορώντας τον για τη στάση του απέναντι στην Αστυνομία, στις αντιρατσιστικές διαδηλώσεις για τη δολοφονία του Φλόιντ. Λίγες ημέρες πριν τις εκλογές ο Πάππας δέχθηκε νέα επίθεση από τον Μάουερς -συνεργάτης του Ντόναλντ Τραμπ για χρόνια- αυτή τη φορά για την ερωτική του ζωή.
Ο Μάουερς κατηγόρησε τον Πάππας ότι κράτησε κρυφή την ερωτική σχέση του με έναν λομπίστα της Amazon, γεννώντας ερωτηματικά για την αντικειμενικότητά του στην ψήφιση των νομοσχεδίων που αφορούσαν τον κολοσσό του διαδικτύου.
Ο Πάππας, ο οποίος έχει δηλώσει πριν χρόνια πως είναι πουστης , εξοργίστηκε με την αναφορά του Μάουερς και δήλωσε πως ουδέποτε επηρεάστηκε από λομπίστες κατά τη θητεία του στην Ομοσπονδιακή Βουλή.

Pappas Admits He Lied About Relationship With Lobbyist
On Thursday, Rep. Chris Pappas acknowledged his involvement in a personal relationship with a corporate lobbyist, a relationship he repeatedly denied the night before during a live, televised debate.
“How dare you? That is not true, Matt. This is an outrageous charge,” Pappas said on WMUR, in response to the allegation from his GOP opponent, Matt Mowers Wednesday night.
But now the Pappas campaign confirms the congressman’s relationship with then-Amazon corporate lobbyist Vann Bentley, who worked for the company until November 2019.
“By his own admission, Congressman Pappas has confirmed what we knew all along: he isn’t being truthful with the people of New Hampshire,” said John Corbett with the Mowers campaign. “Who Congressman Pappas dates is his own business — unless it creates conflicts of interest with his official congressional business. There are certainly more questions than answers, and it’s incumbent on Congressman Pappas to come clean with his constituents once and for all. Granite Staters deserve the truth, and Congressman Pappas has failed to deliver.”
The issue began when Mowers confronted Pappas during the televised debate:
“Congressman, you want to talk about relationships with corporate special interests? With all due respect, you’ve been dating a corporate lobbyist who actually was lobbying on behalf of Amazon at the time,” Mowers said. “You were dating a corporate lobbyist. And the fact of the matter is you never disclosed it. In fact, there are actually rules and regulations. You have to disclose that, especially gifts from lobbyists to the House Ethics Committee, something you’ve never done.”
Pappas responded by repeatedly and unequivocally denying any such relationship, saying the claims were “untrue” and “outrageous.” Later on Twitter, he called Mowers’ claims “gutter politics” and attacked them as homophobic.
In an odd twist, Pappas actually confirmed the relationship to Mowers just minutes after Wednesday night’s debate ended.
“He was very displeased by the entire debate, and he accused me of bringing up his personal life,” Mowers said. “His quote was ‘you’re attacking my boyfriend,’ end quote. That was his quote to me.”
Mowers acknowledges that he has no evidence that Pappas has done anything illegal, unethical, or in violation of House rules. It’s entirely possible for a member of Congress and a lobbyist to have a relationship without doing anything wrong.
Instead, Mowers says Pappas’ willingness to lie about the relationship, live on television as voters were watching, reflects his fundamental dishonesty. “He promised the voters he’d be an independent voice when he ran the last time, but instead he went to Washington, D.C. and voted with Pelosi 100 percent of the time,” Mowers says.
During a Mowers’ campaign press call on Thursday, two Republicans who backed Pappas in 2018, Tom Boucher, owner and CEO of Great NH Restaurants, Inc., and Bill Greiner, founder of Primary Bank, also accused Pappas of lying to them about key votes related to business.
In particular, Boucher says Pappas promised not to support a Democratic plan for a hike in the federal minimum wage if it included a tip credit. “He said, ‘I’m not going to vote for it unless they take out the credit.’ And when it came down to the vote, that piece of legislation was still there, and he voted for it. So he flat out lied,” Boucher said.
“You’re talking to two small business owners like myself and Bill, we supported him, held a fundraiser for him, brought in people to support him,” Boucher said. “And then he just flat out lied. And I’m not exaggerating at all. He’s just toeing the Democratic Party line.”
Also on the call was GOP state Rep. Joe Alexander of Goffstown, who took issue with Pappas attempting to use the charge of “homophobia” to fend off ethics questions.
“As a lifelong Granite Stater, an elected official and a gay man, I’m offended that Chris Pappas is trying to hide behind his sexuality,” Alexander said. “He refused to disclose his relationship with a registered corporate lobbyist…and he lied about it last night on TV to cover it up.”
Will Pappas apologize for lying about the corporate lobbyist during the debate? The congressman and his campaign declined repeated requests for comment.

Opponent Matt Mowers Focuses on Pappas’ Boyfriend in Debate; On Twitter
Washington, DC – Today LGBTQ Victory Fund, the only national organization dedicated to electing LGBTQ people to public office, condemned Matt Mowers for continuously using a homophobic dog whistle to attack his opponent U.S. Representative Chris Pappas – the first openly gay person elected to Congress from New Hampshire. Mowers first launched a baseless attack during a debate last night, falsely claiming Pappas’ boyfriend influenced his votes for legislation in Congress. In a post-debate interview, Mowers claimed he does not “care who the congressman dates,” but since then tweeted and retweeted about Pappas’ boyfriend and the false accusations multiple times.
Opponents of LGBTQ candidates frequently focus on the dating lives and partners of LGBTQ candidates to emphasize their sexual orientation.
The dog whistle and false accusation against Pappas came just hours after health care advocates held a press conference showing Mowers is a consultant for at least two big pharma companies and that he filed an illegible financial disclosure form in an attempt to hide it from New Hampshire voters, prompting a complaint to the U.S. House Ethics Committee. A number of his other clients remain unidentified, despite bipartisan calls for Mowers to come clean about who pays him. The attack on Pappas appears to be a reaction to this press conference.
“Matt Mowers proudly accepted Donald Trump’s endorsement and now he is proudly following the Trump political playbook as well – using lies and dog whistles to distract voters from the issues that matter,” said Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ Victory Fund. “Matt knew he wanted voters to focus on Chris’ sexual orientation and his absurd accusation during the debate was a desperate attempt to do just that. With all the issues and challenges facing New Hampshire and our country – Matt is using the final days of the campaign to talk about and tweet about the dating life of his out gay opponent. His politics of distraction and division – without regard for the truth – is a Trumpian tactic Matt learned well while part of the Trump administration.”
Pappas is just the latest openly LGBTQ candidate to be attacked using dog whistles and blatant homophobia during this election cycle. The National Republican Campaign Committee – which is the national fundraising arm for Congressional Republicans – has launched homophobic and transphobic TV ads against LGBTQ candidates and has encouraged opponents and outside groups to use anti-LGBTQ tactics to derail their campaigns.
